In New York, Governor Kathy Hochul has proposed legislation that would require data centers over a certain size to meet renewable energy benchmarks. By 2040, these centers would need to get at least 90% of their energy from renewable sources. This is a realistic target, according to state Sen. Kristen Gonzalez, who believes that wealthy companies building data centers in New York should have the resources to build out renewable energy sources to power them.

Michigan, Oregon, and Minnesota have all enacted laws in the last 18 months to protect their pre-existing requirements that electric utilities use only emissions-free energy sources by 2040. These states are taking a proactive approach to ensuring that their energy demands are met without compromising their climate goals.
However, the challenge is real. Data centers are consuming energy at a rate that is difficult for renewable energy sources to keep up with. This has led to a boom in natural gas-fired power plants, and even the revival of aging coal-fired power plants. But, there is a silver lining: tech giants are investing billions into their own zero-emissions projects, such as solar, wind, geothermal, nuclear, and battery storage.
What makes this particularly fascinating is the way in which tech giants are pushing utilities to expand access to the power grid. By doing so, they are not only ensuring that their own energy demands are met, but also creating opportunities for clean energy advocates to persuade regulators to expand access to the grid. This is a powerful example of how businesses can drive innovation and change.
In my opinion, the fight to ensure that clean energy powers data centers is a crucial one. It's not just about meeting climate goals, but also about ensuring that our energy infrastructure is resilient and sustainable. The world is changing rapidly, and we need to be prepared for the energy demands of the future.
